Useful Information

Survival Kit

  • Getting around: “The city center is best explored exclusively on foot. If you wish to go beyond the city walls, use rental bikes or city buses.”

  • Verona Card: “We recommend buying it if you plan to visit more than two monuments or churches: it’s a great deal!”

  • Clothing: “Comfortable shoes are a must: our ‘sampietrini’ (cobblestones) are unforgiving on high heels!”

Did you know? “The pink marble you see everywhere in Verona is called ‘Rosso Ammonitico’ and comes from our local hills. If you look closely at the steps of the Arena, you can still find tiny fossils embedded in the stone!”

Verona’s heart: art, history, and food

THE HEART OF THE CITY

  • Arena di Verona: the city’s symbol throughout the world. Whether for an opera under the stars or a daytime tour, this Roman amphitheater is breathtaking in its majesty.
  • Juliet’s House: an iconic stop for romantics. The famous balcony and Juliet’s statue tell the Shakespearian myth that has made Verona the ‘City of Love’.
  • Piazza delle Erbe: considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Admire the frescoed palaces and enjoy an aperitivo among the stalls of the historic market.

VIEWS AND STROLLS

  • Castel San Pietro: the city’s most stunning viewpoint. Take the funicular or walk up to enjoy an unforgettable sunset over the entire bend of the Adige River.
  • Castelvecchio and the Scaligero Bridge: a walk through history. This crenelated bridge is the perfect spot for stunning photos, surrounded by the medieval charm of the Della Scala family.
  • Giusti Garden: a Renaissance oasis of peace. One of the most elegant gardens in Europe, featuring manicured boxwood hedges, classical statues, and a hedge maze.

CULTURE AND SPIRITUALITY

  • The Cathedral Complex: the ultimate expression of Veronese art. Don’t miss Titian’s altarpiece and the charming Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte.
  • San Zeno Basilica: a Romanesque masterpiece. Famous for its rose window (known as the ‘Wheel of Fortune’) and Mantegna’s magnificent triptych.
  • Scaliger Tombs: a Gothic gem just steps away from Piazza dei Signori. These monumental tombs of Verona’s lords are a masterpiece of stone sculpture.

A TASTE OF VERONA

  • Bollito con la pearà: the ‘Holy Grail’ of Veronese cuisine. A ‘poor’ yet incredibly flavorful sauce made from breadcrumbs, marrow, and plenty of black pepper, served alongside tender boiled meats.
  • Verona’s Pandoro: the quintessential Christmas cake, born right here. If you visit the city in winter, the scent of powdered sugar is everywhere.
  • Pastissada de caval: a cornerstone of local tradition. This rich, spiced meat stew is best enjoyed with a side of warm polenta.
  • Juliet’s Kisses (Baci di Giulietta): delicate pastry treats with a chocolate heart. The perfect gourmet souvenir to take home after a stroll through the city center.

Fun Fact: Legend has it that ‘Pearà’ sauce dates back to the 6th century, during the reign of the Longobard King Alboin and Queen Rosamund. As the story goes, the King forced Rosamund to drink from a cup crafted from her father’s skull. Devastated by grief, the Queen decided to starve herself to death. To save her and restore her strength, the court chef invented a sauce so flavorful, nourishing, and ‘peppery’ (hence the name pearà) that it succeeded in reviving her spirit and bringing back her smile.

Beyond the city: Waterscapes and Vineyards

“Just a few miles from Verona, postcard-perfect landscapes and unforgettable flavors await you.”

THE LAKE AND BEYOND

UNMISSABLE BORGHI

  • Sirmione: a must-visit for the Grottoes of Catullus and the Scaliger Castle. I highly recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds.
  • Malcesine: famous for its medieval Castle and the Monte Baldo cable car, leading to the ‘Garden of Europe’.
  • Bardolino and Lazise: perfect for a sunset stroll and an aperitivo by the lake.

EXPERIENCES & NATURE

  • Tibetan Bridge (Torri del Benaco): a simple yet scenic hike with breathtaking views.
  • Limone sul Garda Cycling Path: although on the Brescia side, it’s a must-see for anyone visiting the lake. This ‘floating’ walkway suspended over the water is truly magnetic.
  • Punta San Vigilio: defined as the ‘Portofino of Lake Garda,’ it is the most romantic spot in the province.
  • Ponte di Veja: a natural wonder. It is the largest natural stone bridge in Europe and is said to have inspired Dante Alighieri for the settings of his Inferno.
  • Santuario della Madonna della Corona: a must-visit destination perched on the eastern cliff of Mount Baldo. It is famously known as the sanctuary ‘carved’ directly into the rock face.
  • Giro delle Malghe (Velo Veronese – Erbezzo): more than just a trail, it’s a true local experience. Don’t miss the ‘gnocco di malga,’ the signature dish of the Lessinia mountains.

GASTRONOMY & TRADITION

  • Valpolicella: for wine enthusiasts, a visit to Valpolicella is a must. Here, you can discover the historic cellars where the world-renowned Amarone wine is born.
  • Borghetto sul Mincio: officially one of the most beautiful villages in Italy! Be sure to stop and taste the famous Valeggio tortellini, locally known as the ‘Love Knot’ (Nodo d’Amore).
  • Olive Oil & Lemons: don’t miss the chance to visit a traditional Garda oil mill. You can discover how the PDO extra virgin olive oil is produced and taste the area’s renowned limoncello.
  • Across the Province: the entire Verona region is a treasure trove of culinary excellence. Take the time to stop and experience the true, authentic tastes of our territory.

FUN & THEME PARKS

  • Gardaland and Movieland: Italy’s largest theme park resort area. Gardaland offers world-class adventure for all ages, while Movieland brings the thrills of Hollywood cinema to life.
  • Parco Natura Viva: a must for those who love animals and wildlife conservation. It is a leading center for the protection of endangered species.
  • Parco Giardino Sigurtà: one of the most beautiful botanical parks in the world.
  • Terme di Colà: a wellness oasis where you can soak in warm thermal lakes surrounded by centuries-old trees.
